Descrizione

Sebbene noto solo da resti parziali, sono stati trovati abbastanza resti di mwfqPterosphenus per suggerire che fosse un grande serpente. Sulla base del modello di regressione utilizzato per stimare la lunghezza dei mwfgboidi, la stima della lunghezza più affidabile si colloca tra i 2,5 e i 4,8 metri; la vertebra più grande potrebbe essere appartenuta a un individuo che raggiungese i 5,7 metri di lunghezza.cite-ref-3[3] Il suo corpo era fortemente compresso lateralmente come adattamento alla mwgwvita pelagica.

Classificazione

mwhgPterosphenus appartiene ai serpenti Alethinophidia, un mwiamwiqclade che include tutti i serpenti al di fuori dei mwigserpenti ciechi e dei serpenti filo, e più specificamente all'estinto mwjaPalaeophiidae. Il suo parente più prossimo è mwjqmwjgPalaeophis, ed entrambi appartengono alla sottofamiglia mwjwPalaeophiinae. Sono note sei specie, mwkaP. schucherti dal mwkqNord America, mwkgP. sheppardi dal mwkwSud America, mwlaP. schweinfurthi dall'mwlqAfrica settentrionale e mwlgP. biwasi, mwlwP. kutchensis e mwmaP. rannensis dall'mwmqAsia.cite-ref-p-rannensis25-4-0[4]

Paleoambiente e paleoecologia

mwpqPterosphenus era un rettile marino che viveva nei mari poco profondi dei futuri Stati Uniti orientali (i suoi fossili sono noti dal mwpgTexas, mwpwLouisiana, mwqaMississippi e mwqqArkansas e a nord fino al mwqgNew Jersey), nell'mwqwoceano Tetide africano (i cui fossili sono noti dal mwraMaroccocite-ref-5[5], mwsqLibiacite-ref-6[6], mwtgNigeriacite-ref-7[7] ed mwuwEgittocite-ref-8[8]), Sud America (i cui fossili sono noti dall'mwwaEcuadorcite-ref-9[9]) e Asia meridionale (i cui fossili sono noti dall'mwxqIndiacite-ref-10[10]cite-ref-p-rannensis25-4-1[4]). mwzgPterosphenus era un superpredatore del proprio ecosistema, probabilmente, predando pesci e molluschi trovati nella stessa area.

È certo che mwaaPterosphenus avrebbe incontrato i mwaqcetacei basali dell'epoca, come mwagmwawZygorhiza, mwbamwbqDorudon e mwbgmwbwBasilosaurus, anche se è probabile che una combinazione di suddivisione di mwcanicchia ecologica e di vita in aree diverse nel caso di mwcqBasilosaurus (che viveva in ecosistemi estuarini secondo recenti ritrovamenti) avrebbe impedito la competizione tra le specie.
